Artist statement
Mia-Franziska Böhm’s practice examines the ways meaning is projected onto objects and coincidences. It looks at how manifestation, subliminals, lucky charms, and other systems can promise guidance, reassurance, or control. This Luck also carries a darker side where hope can shift into risk, repetition, and disappointment.
Cherries, jewellery, decorative objects, tattoos, and symbols associated with girlhood form part of this visual language. Text appears both within the images and on the body, where a tattoo can become a promise to oneself, permanently inscribed into the skin. These gestures reflect aspects of the female experience while also pointing to the desire to give hopes, beliefs, and personal narratives a lasting form.
The work moves between comfort and uncertainty. Assigning meaning can be constructive, but it can also create expectations, rules, and imagined systems that exist only within our own minds. Through airbrushing, familiar motifs become softened and slightly unreal, suspended between projection, desire, and disappointment.
